Summary
We teamed with the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation (OSPF) and Be Present Ohio to launch To Be Me, a mental health initiative created to support LGBTQIA+ youth, including those in the process of navigating their own gender identity or sexuality. By promoting inclusion and mental health awareness, To Be Me exists to advance the cause of suicide prevention by encouraging LGBTQIA+ youth to embrace their true colors!

Working to Stop Suicide
Why are initiatives like To Be Me so important? According to a 2024 survey conducted by the Trevor Project, 39% of LGBTQIA+ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year. However, those who felt a high level of support reported attempting suicide at less than half the rate of those who felt low or moderate social support.
Creating
Community
To Be Me took over the Be Present Ohio Instagram account for Pride Month in both 2023 and 2024 to spark excitement and raise awareness for the many life-saving mental health resources available to young members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Social content was posted organically before being boosted in order to reach as much of our audience as possible, including friends and family of LGBTQIA+ youth.

Social media content included GIFs and other bold graphics representing various gender and sexual identities, giving LGBTQIA+ youth a way to proudly showcase their true colors. Acting as a beacon of hope for those struggling to navigate their identity, these dynamic representations of various queer identities were meant to empower our audience to be their authentic selves by finding the joy in what it means “to be me.”

To provide LGBTQIA+ youth with yet another way to show pride in their identities, we printed stickers featuring blank spaces, enabling participants to craft their own unique responses and share their pride with the world.

Our team created an interactive map featuring mental health resources explicitly aimed at LGBTQ+ youth and young adults all across the state of Ohio. This comprehensive tool helps users find local support centers, counseling services, drop-in locations, and community organizations committed to providing the care and help they need.
